GTA V has two main vsync modes, one that locks the screen’s refresh rate (60 in our case), and one that locks to half the refresh rate (30). Let’s start with some of the lighter games that you can expect to play on the XPS 13 without much trouble.

Dropping the game down to 720p or even lower can help, provided that the game supports it.īelow, we show how to get the best performance in several popular games when playing on the Dell XPS 13.

  • Lower the Screen Resolution: The XPS 13's display is either 1080p or 3200 x 1800, but it may not be able to push all those pixels in high-end games.
  • If you deliberately the limit the frames-per-second to 60 fps on lighter games and 30 fps on more-demanding titles, you can avoid overtaxing the laptop.
  • Cap the FPS: If the XPS 13 gets too warm, it may throttle performance, resulting in an unstable game.
  • Download all Windows updates: Go to Settings->Update & Security to make sure you have the latest and that Windows isn't wasting cycles downloading as you game.
  • Use the search function to find additional information on this issue. While each game is a little different, making the following changes to your XPS 13 will help across the board.

You will need to upgrade if you are going to participate in the beta program.

TSW will be a 64 bit architecture game and you will need a 64 bit OS to run. You will find that reducing the number of programs and services running and adjusting settings to optimize your particular system to enhance your experience will also improve game play. As suggested a SSD will improve the speed that files are unpacked. Routes and scenarios with dense scenery and areas with a lot of rolling stock such as rail yards can cause big frame rate drops. The frame drops and stuttering are due to the time it takes to unpack and process the files. Faster throughput makes for better game play. To my understanding this game uses only 1 core of the processor and that is also shared by other windows services so the multi-core capability of the processor is underutilized therefore processor speed is important.

This is a 32 bit game therefore it’s utilization of the CPU is not efficient as with most newer games that use a 64 bit architecture. This has been discussed in depth for years. Like you said, the game needs a new engine. I don't get this in any other games, they just have a good constant FPS. But what I don't get on my PC, is that the FPS just suddenly drops from about 35 to 15, stays there for a few seconds, and then goes back up in-game, but also on the loading screen. Yes, I do agree with that, it needs a new engine. At least they will be using a modern up to date engine. It will be quite interesting to see how the new TSW is going to run and if it will make the simulator run smoother and at higher FPS. And adding new features might also cause other part to run slower.

I think TS has been using the same engine for the last many year or perhaps ever since the first version of Rail Simulator way back and maybe decisions made in the beginning is now preventing them from getting around the limitations of the engine or doing optimizations might become more and more complicated as they keep trying the patch those areas that are caused the problems. Originally posted by Virtual:I would imagine poor optimization of the engine is the result of the low fps, and probably why they are now focusing on a new engine the the TSW.

Surely the more detail the lower FPS? What is it about TS that slows down the PC? TS is by far NOT the most detailed game I have, yet it can be one of the slowest. What annoys me is that I can get fantastic FPS in other games such as Grid 2 (up to 70) and these seem to be so much more detailed than Train Simulator. And it would be long to change the TS settings to suit every time you drove on a different route. The thing with Train Simulator, is that all routes have different FPS on average.

I did actually lower the shadow quality to see if it made any difference but I found that it was already nearly on zero anyway. Yes, you are right, I am running in on a laptop. All those little wires overhead cast shadows! Hi thanks for all your great suggestions so far. particuarly in the cities on electrified routes. When I cut the shadow quality on my machine from full quality to half, my frame rate nearly doubled in some areas of some routes. The best "fix" I've found is to lower the shadow quality. Laptops are unsupported because of this.Įven on a high end desktop PC I get frame stutters that drop well below 20 on many routes sometimes. It looks to be a good one, but it's still a laptop meaning it has way less power than it's desktop counterparts. Originally posted by Jack:It sounds like you're running a laptop.
